    Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is an amazing city, not only does it have modern significance, as the capital of Scotland and the birthplace of Harry Potter, it also has an amazing history everywhere you turn. It was very different from Glasgow. We got a hop-on hop-off bus pass to limit the amount of walking we were doing. The first place we wanted to go to towers over the city. It’s Edinburgh Castle. The castle has stood since at least the 12th century and is one of the most attacked places in the world. The castle stands tall on Castle Rock and is one end of the Royal Mile. Walking the Royal Mile means…

    Fyvie Castle

hav In my small hometown, many families have distant Scottish ancestry. As far as we know, only one shares their name with a castle. Their name is Fyvie. When they heard that mom was headed to Scotland they told her about this castle they wished to visit because it shares their name, Fyvie Castle. We found it on a map and saw it wasn’t out-of-the-way of our planned route. We decided to stop, take some pictures, and get something branded from the gift shop for them. Early in the morning, we left Inverness headed for Aberdeen. You turn off the highway and follow what I would call a one-lane, two-way…

    Inverness

hav We finally arrived in Inverness in the early evening. Most of our day was driving from Glasgow, exploring the various Lochs, villages, and sites along the way. We didn’t have as much time as we wanted in town. There had been may extra stops on the drive up. We used all of our time to go out and explore the city. There were many walking streets and that made it easy to explore. Inverness has its own castle. The castle overlooks the river and is home to the Sheriff’s Court. Inverness has many churches, such as the Ness Bank Church with a recently installed statue out front and the…

    Loching Around Scotland

We left Grandma visiting friends in Glasgow. The rest of us travelled Northwest to reach the Highlands. We stopped in the village of Luss, to explore and make our way to the shore of Loch Lomond. It is one of the largest lochs in the United Kingdom. Luss The village of Luss was quaint. The houses looked like they were taken from a storybook. The people we passed were friendly and informative. Even the notices posted around town had a friendly feel. Loch Lomond Loch Lomond is large and seems to go on and on when you look left or right. There is a dock built for boats to moar…

    Glasgow

Glasgow is an amazing city. It has buildings and places that have been around longer than Canada has even been a country. Kathy and I explored on our own. The rest of the family went to Troon. The Open, a PGA event, was being held in Troon and dad wanted to go. After a lazy morning, we headed back to a large pink/red stone building we had seen the night before. It was the Kelvingrove Art Gallery. The inside and outside were both pretty amazing. From the Art Gallery we could see a tower from the University of Glasgow and it called to us. So we used to tower to…

Shared Journeys – Ireland and Scotland

I spent the last two weeks sharing an incredible journey with my family. Unfortunately my brother couldn’t get the time off but mom, dad, grandma, and a family friend shared this two week drive through two beautiful countries. We met in London, their flight landed at 11am(ish) and we checked into the airport hotel. Then it was into town for a day of not knowing where do eat, what to do, or how long things would take.
