Game of Thrones Sites – Dubrovnik
The reason we travelled to Dubrovnik, besides the beauty of the city, was to see Game of Thrones filming locations. I wrote about the rest of our time in Dubrovnik here.
Jesuit Staircase
The location mom really wanted to see was the Jesuit Staircase, which is the location of the Sept of Baelor. This is also the location of Cercei’s walk of shame. Mom expected the staircase to be much longer and was a little disappointed. I’m glad she didn’t expect the Sept of Baelor to be there.
Rector’s Palace
The Rector’s Palace is hard to miss, being at the end of the main street. It was built to be a place of government and became the Spice King’s mansion in Game of Thrones.
St. Dominic
In the area around Polce Gate is St. Dominic Street and the Dominican Monastery. St. Dominic Street has been used in many scenes when characters are walking around Kings Landing. The steps of the Dominican Monastery have been used as a setting for speeches and protests.
Pile Harbour
Outside the walls of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, there are also a number of recognizable filming locations. Pile Harbour is the setting of various different harbours. The magic of television and filming from specific angles can make this one harbour look like different locations.
Fort Lovrijenac
Fort Lovrijenac is up on the hill on the other side of Pile Harbour. It is famous for being the Red Keep but is also the filming location of Joffrey’s naming ceremony.
Lokrum Island
The green island of Lokrum is better known as the city of Qarth. This beautiful island is accessible by ferry or by kayak if your feeling adventurous.
The City Walls
The city walls are featured in Game of Thrones many times. You can buy tickets to walk the city walls. The best time to go is early, while the walls are less crowded. Also, in the hot months going early is a way to beat the heat.
Whatever reason you decide to travel to Dubrovnik, there are a few places you can’t help but recognize if you are a Game of Thrones fan.
