    Trouble in Thailand

My chance encounter took place in Bangkok airport in August of 2009, when I was 22. I finished working on an Archaeological dig at Scladina Cave (website is in French) and was headed off to Thailand to meet my best friend. She was living and working in Japan and I thought Thailand was a good compromise on flight times for both of us. She would have to return to Japan and I would have to return to Europe for another dig. We had a great time in Thailand and when it was time to leave we packed our bags. Her flight was a few hours before mine. I wanted to…

    Stroll

At my place of work, we are bussed to and from work. It picks up from the apartment at 6 am and departs the school at 3:10 pm. This means that for those of us that tutor after school we take a taxi back home. Usually, I like this. If a friend is tutoring at the same time we will share a taxi, usually to their apartment and I will take a leisurely stroll back to my apartment. The walk is usually about 25-30 minutes. It’s been nice to get out in the afternoon. If I tutor alone I get dropped off at the beach about 15 minutes away from…

    Beaches

I love the beach. I grew up on an island and have always been close to water. When I travel I try to find a nice place with a beach to travel to. The beach reminds me of home, of friends and family. Beaches are a great place for adventure whether cliff jumping, scuba diving, kite surfing, or any other activity, beaches can be a great place for a thrill. Beaches can be a calm place where you go to read a book, watch the waves, or nap in the sun. I have been to some amazing beaches around the world and hope to get a chance to travel to…

    Communication

Weekend I can’t imagine what it was like to travel 100 years ago, or even 20 years ago when communication would have been limited and difficult. I’m okay with going off the grid for a while and being out of reach, sometimes that’s what I really need when I travel. When I come home though I always want to call home. My mom, on the other hand, is not as okay when I travel off the grid for any periods of time. She, like most mothers, want to be sure I am safe and happy. She like’s pictures and updates. My grandma scrapbooks. She always wants pictures up on Facebook…

    Next Trip

Weekend It took me quite a while to get everything figured out for my next adventure. We have a 4 day weekend next weekend but I have decided not to travel and to take the time to relax and clean house. That means that the next time I travel will be our spring break in April. I will head to Greece for a week. It’s not as much time as I would like, but I can always go back again later to explore more islands and the northern area or Greece. I arrive late at night, just in time to get to the hotel. The next day I will have…

    Intrepid Travel

Weekend I wrote all about what I did while I travelled with Intrepid in Egypt but not about after. So here it is. I must say that overall I had a great time on my trip with Intrepid. Pre-Trip On December 29th there was a change in the route of the trip. Due to hostilities with Libya in the Western Desert. There was an incident that occurred in September and the tour cancelled that portion of the trip and instead went to Hurghada on the Red Sea. On Trip On the first night, we sat down in our meeting with tour guide Mohammed Ali, who was amazing the entire trip.…

    I learned an interesting fact

Weekend I was recently speaking with a friend of mine about some of the changes we are hoping to see in Canada under the new Federal Government. Somethings we are hoping stay the same with the new government. We arrived onto the topic of TFSAs (Tax-Free Savings) and investing money. This is when I learned my new interesting fact. In Islam, it is against people’s beliefs to gain interest. I wanted to know more. As far as I knew people were not keeping their life savings in piles of cash under the bed. My friend told me that they keep money in the bank and that money gains interest. The…

    Shopping and Bargaining

Weekend I went out last night with one of my Canadian-Kuwaiti friends. We took to one of the main streets in Salmiya for some gossip and some shopping and bargaining when we should have been headed for the gym. Three hours of walking around carrying bags are just like 1 hour in a gym class, right? In more traditional shops bargaining is the norm. I’m a bad bargainer. Unless I know I am being taken for a ridiculous ride, I like to see the price, pay it, and get out. She does not. She knows what she wants and she knows the value of it and will fight until she…
